Child in stable condition after shooting at RiverWest

A 9-year-old boy is in stable condition after he was shot in the chest at the RiverWest public housing complex in South Peoria on Sunday night.

Peoria Police responded to a 2-round ShotSpotter alert in the 1300 block of SW Phoenix just after 8:30 p.m. The wounded child was found inside a residence and taken to the hospital.

Police said suspects wearing dark clothing were caught trying to break into a vehicle by residents. One of the suspects reportedly fired a gunshot when they were approached by a citizen. That round from outside entered the apartment and struck the child inside, police said.

Officers are looking for anyone with camera footage or other leads. Anyone with information is asked to contact Peoria Police Detective Jake Beck at (309) 494-8480, or anonymously to Tip411 or CrimeStoppers at (309) 673-9000.
