A weekly spotlight on arts activities in Central Illinois. Out and About is made possible in part by PNC Financial Services and a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.

Discover custom car culture in a new light at the Peoria Riverfront Museum's latest exhibition

On this week’s Out and About, Dr. Mae Gilliland of ArtsPartners of Central Illinois is joined by Everley Davis, assistant curator and community engagement coordinator at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, to talk about the upcoming exhibition BUILT: American Custom Car Culture, opening Feb. 1.

Davis discusses the inspiration behind the exhibition, which celebrates the history, artistry, and mechanics of custom cars — an iconic aspect of American culture and Midwestern culture in particular. Featuring guest curators Darius Donaldson and Farai Kasambira known locally for their expertise in custom cars, BUILT highlights the unique stories and craftsmanship behind each of these "mobile sculptures."

Jody Holtz was WCBU's assistant program and development director. She left the station in 2025.
