Nearly $600,000 worth of grants will fund new electric vehicle charging ports in East Peoria and Minonk.
The Illinois Department of Transportation says the Kohl's department store in East Peoria is getting six ports from the initial round of funding from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program.
The Modern Stay 39 motel in Minonk will also get four charging ports as part of the $25.3 million grant round.
Gov. JB Pritzker says he wants a million EVs on Illinois roads by 2030. The state will need around 30,000 more charging ports to facilitate that goal. There are currently about 2,300 level two charging ports in the state, according to a February article from Capitol News Illinois. Those ports can fully charge an electric vehicle in five to six hours.
The U.S. Department of Energy maintains a map of charging ports around the United States.
