A Peoria man is dead after he was struck by a vintage car in the Metro Centre parking lot.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said 76-year-old Richard Wilson was getting an item from his 1949 Chevy on Friday when he accidentally put the gearshift into neutral, causing the vehicle to roll backwards.

Harwood said Wilson tried to stop the vehicle, but it rolled on top of him. Wilson was freed when bystanders lifted the car, but he suffered severe chest injuries. Harwood said he likely died moments after he was run over.
