A person is dead after a shooting in downtown Peoria early Friday morning, according to the Peoria Police Department.

The Peoria County Coroner identified the victim as 45-year-old Sylvester Erving, and scheduled an autopsy for Monday.

Police say they found Erving with an apparent gunshot wound near the 500 block of Main Street just after 2:30 a.m. while responding to a report of shots fired. Erving was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and died at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center around noon Friday.

As of Friday evening, police say they have a suspect in custody. Forty-year-old Lacorlis T. Edwards reportedly turned himself in and was arrested under charges of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. He’s currently in the Peoria County Jail.

Peoria police say they are continuing to investigate the case and advise anyone with information to reach out with information at (309) 673-4521. People can contact tip411 or Crime Stoppers at (309) 673-9000 for anonymous tips.
