A Peoria man and woman were arrested Thursday on charges of cruel treatment of animals after 27 dogs were found in their home.

According to a news release from the Peoria Police Department, officers were called to the home at the 2800 block of West Meidroth around 8:47 a.m. Thursday for a welfare check. Upon entering the home, they found 27 dogs that were extremely malnourished and were being kept in unlivable conditions, said police.

Eileen Wood, 60, and Kevin Schuch, 54, were arrested on 27 counts of cruel treatment of animals and 27 charges of violation of owner duties under the Human Care of Animals Act. Both were transported to the Peoria County Jail.

The dogs were brought to the Peoria County Animal Protection Services for treatment.
