Out and About in Greater Peoria: Irish Fest, live music and a trip to the past

Here are 3 things to do for the weekend of Aug. 23- Aug. 25, 2023, curated by WCBU's Camryn Cutinello. You can find more coverage on our Out & About - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WCBU's Weekend Fanfare email newsletter, which goes out every Friday.

Celebrate: Break out your green garb and four-leaf clovers because the Peoria Irish Fest is back at the Riverfront this weekend. The fest features a packed schedule of live music, athletic events, kids' activities, Irish history lessons and, of course, Irish dancing. The fest opens at 4 p.m. today and goes all weekend. Single day tickets cost $15 and weekend passes cost $30.

Listen: Revel in Red plays downtown Pekin Saturday. This band covers hits from the 1970s to today, including Prince, Van Halen, Boston, Bruno Mars and more. The Downtown Concert Series offers crafts, food and beverage vendors. The event opens at 5 p.m. and the band performs from 7 to 10 p.m. Don’t forget your lawn chairs.

Learn: Take a trip to the past Sunday at the Wheels O’Time Museum. Listen to a talk about the Pullman Porters, the first Black union founded in 1925. Known as the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the union helped fuel the Great Migration, shaped the Black middle class and played a crucial role in the Civil Rights movement. The talk goes from 1 to 2 p.m. and costs $12.
