At-large Peoria City Council member John Kelly won a second term in last April's consolidated election.

Peoria at-large city council member John Kelly plans to throw his hat into the ring for the mayoral race in 2025.

Kelly confirmed his intent to seek the position of mayor with WCBU Wednesday afternoon. He said he doesn't plan on beginning his campaign in earnest until early next year.

Kelly is in his second term as an at-large council member. He was first elected to the council in 2019.

Kelly joins an early and narrow field, consisting of just him and incumbent Mayor Rita Ali.

Ali officially announced her re-election campaign on Tuesday.

The candidate filing dates are Oct. 21-28. The mayoral election is April 1, 2025. If three or more candidates file, there will be a primary election on Feb. 25, 2025.
