A teenager suffered life-threatening injuries after he was shot at the head at an "after prom party" in Chillicothe.

Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins said authorities were called to the Valley Lakes Center at 13929 N. Ivy Lake Rd. just before 1 a.m. Sunday on a report of a large group fighting, and shots fired.

Deputies arriving at the scene found a large group of people running away from a parking lot, and an 18-year-old lying on the ground. Watkins said he had a stolen firearm in his waistband. Forty-eight shell casings were found in the parking lot.

Watkins said the property manager was told the pre-planned after prom party was actually a birthday party. It was put together by students from area schools.

There are no suspects in custody, but investigators believe there were witnesses to the shooting who haven't come forward.
