2 people dead after car strikes tree in Germantown Hills

Two people are dead after a vehicle struck a tree off Illinois Route 116 in Germantown Hills on Thursday evening.

The crash happened just after 6:45 p.m. Woodford County Coroner Tim Ruestman said a westbound Chevrolet Camaro left the roadway and struck a tree. Passenger Brian Brunson, 37, of East Peoria was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, 33-year-old Thomas Wood of Pekin, was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he was pronounced dead by Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood just after 7:30 p.m.

Wood died of multiple blunt force injuries. An autopsy for Brunson will be conducted by the Woodford County Coroner's Office. Toxicology tests are pending for both men. The crash remains under investigation.
