Icy conditions caused by freezing rain are leading many schools and institutions to play it safe Monday.
Rebekka Delaney, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said freezing rain will continue overnight before transitioning into rain tomorrow morning. She said roads will be very slick all day, and that people should stay home if possible.
"I would continue to bundle up gloves, hat, jacket," Delaney said. "Pretty much anyone be careful walking for the slick spots, there's a danger of falls today. So I would just if you don't have to go out don't go out."
Delaney said there is also a risk of black ice.
The City of Peoria Department of Public Works is also recommending people stay home and only travel if necessary. Anyone who has to drive should do so with extreme caution and keep extra distance between cars.
Delaney said it will rain for most of tomorrow morning but rain should stop by the afternoon. She said it will rain Wednesday and Thursday but there is no freezing potential.
Peoria Public Schools says Monday is an e-learning day in the district, with no in-person instruction or after-school activities.
Most Peoria County facilities are also closing for the day. That includes the Peoria County Courthouse, Veterans Assistance Commission, Peoria County Election Commission, Peoria County Animal Protection Services lobby, Peoria City/County Health Department offices, and the Highway Department office buildings.
The Peoria County Jail still remains open, but the sheriff's lobby, records, and visitation are closed. Inmates can be visited remotely. The bonding lobby is still open.
Peoria County is under a collision alert. Drivers involved in vehicle crashes where no one is injured are asked to exchange information and report the accident in person to the Peoria County Sheriff's Office at 301 N. Maxwell Road, as soon as reasonably possible, but within 48 hours of the conclusion of the alert.
Illinois Central College is closed until 5 p.m. Monday due to the weather conditions. Bradley University is e-learning today and offices are closed.
