Peoria High School's football team will face Nazareth Academy in the IHSA Class 5A state championship Saturday morning at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

The Peoria High School football team will forfeit their seven 2023 victories after the IHSA ruled at least one ineligible player participated in those games.

Athletic Director Brien Dunphy says the two players' ineligibility is due to an administrative error.

"Verifying eligibility's become increasingly difficult due to students believing the transfer portal is open, and doubly difficult in a school with very high student mobility," he said.

Dunphy says these students will continue to be responsible for getting passing grades and sports physicals that are required of other student athletes.

In a statement to WCBU, IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said he believes the school is taking the matter seriously.

"It is disappointing any time that we must issue forfeits, but it remains imperative that IHSA member schools adhere to the Association’s by-laws," Anderson said.

He said the association will support them in efforts to ensure a similar situation doesn't happen again.
