The Peoria Heights Village Board of Trustees on Tuesday approved the hiring of Dan Decker as the community's new fire chief.

The village of Peoria Heights Board of Trustees approved a candidate for fire chief Tuesday night.

In a unanimous vote, the board confirmed Dan Decker to the position. Decker is a former assistant chief at the East Peoria Fire Department and a current East Peoria City Council member.

Peoria Heights Mayor Mike Phelan said there were two board members absent from the vote: Matt Wigginton and Jeff Goett. However, he said he has "every reason to believe" they would have voted to approve the hiring.

Decker's hiring follows a months-long search, as the village considers changing the structure of the primarily volunteer department.

Phelan said Decker started work on a full department needs assessment Wednesday morning.
