Out and About in Greater Peoria: Hayrides, a Halloween run and DIY Halloween candles

Here are 3 things to do for the weekend of Oct. 27 through Oct. 29, 2023, curated by WCBU's Meagan Ruger-Smith. You can find more coverage on our Out & About - Arts & Music page or by subscribing to WCBU's Weekend Fanfare email newsletter, which goes out every Friday.

Hayrides, smores and hot dogs: Tonight from 4 to 7 p.m., head out to Sommer Farm for Hayrides and Hotdogs. Come experience an annual fall event featuring a hayrack ride and hotdog & smore roast over an open fire. Guests can also enjoy libations from Parks on Tap Traveling TapHouse and activities from Peoria Park District's on the Go! Meals include hotdog, baked beans, chips and non-alcoholic drink. Halloween costumes are encouraged. There is a $10 entrance fee at the door.

A chilling Halloween race: Tomorrow at 6 p.m., head to the Springdale Cemetery for the Screaming Pumpkin. Chills and thrills will keep you motivated as you run or walk through a 2 mile walk, 6.55 mile run, half marathon, full marathon or full marathon relay! Run or walk if you dare. Once you start, there is no turning back. The half, full and relay are prediction runs. This race benefits the Yellow Bear Foundation, a non-profit spreading awareness and fund research of Primary Immunodeficiency.

DIY Halloween candles: Kick off your Sunday afternoon with Halloween Candles Making Experience! In this workshop, we’ll teach you how to custom design your very own soy-wax candles! This class includes: two hours of guided instruction by an experienced candle maker, an overview of the candle making process, fragrance design and one candle in a signature vessel. Tickets are $25 and the class runs from 2 to 5 p.m.

Meagan Ruger-Smith is a sophomore sports communication major at Bradley University, with minors in ethics and journalism. Meagan joined WCBU in 2023.
