Coroner identifies Peoria man who died after Sunday collision

Yellow police tape stretches across a blurry crime scene. It says "Police Line Do Not Cross." The text "WCBU Police and Fire" lays on top of that photo.

A Peoria man who died after he was struck by a truck Sunday evening has been identified.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said 43-year-old Cornelius Dixson was initially conscious when first responders arrived to the scene at Western and Garden, but his condition rapidly worsened.

He was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Harwood says he suffered multiple blunt force injuries inconsistent with life.

Peoria police say Dixson ignored a stop sign and was struck by the truck headed north on Western when he tried to cross. A damaged bicycle was found nearby.

The truck driver was uninjured and remained on the scene when police arrived. Police have described the incident as a "fatal accident."
