The United States Air Force is picking Peoria as one of four preferred locations for the new C-130J Super Hercules planes that will replace the aging C-130H fleet.

A total of eight new aircraft could be coming to each location.

U.S. Congressman Darin LaHood, R-Dunlap, praised the announcement, saying the upgrades will maintain the 182nd Airlift Wing's flight mission for years to come.

Hartford, Connecticut, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Great Falls, Montana are the other recommended locations for the upgrades.

C-130s are used for tactical airlift missions. C-130Js have lower manpower requirements and operating costs compared with older models.

The Air Force will conduct an environmental impact analysis at each location ahead of a final decision in fiscal year 2025.
