A man is dead after an apparent hit-and-run incident on Peoria's South Side early Monday morning.

Police responded to a call in the 1900 block of West Howett just after 3:30 a.m. The man was apparently riding a bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said the victim was 28-year-old Akeem Alexander of Peoria. He suffered "multiple and unsurvivable" blunt-force trauma injuries and died instantly.

Officers found the suspect's vehicle unoccupied in the 2100 block of Antoinette shortly afterwards. A K9 search of the area didn't turn anyone up.

The victim's identity hasn't yet been released. There wasn't immediately any additional information available on suspects.
