A person is dead after a single-vehicle crash Wednesday in Peoria.

Peoria police responded to a call of a vehicle leaving the roadway at Miramar and University just before 10:30 a.m.

Officers on the scene discovered the vehicle struck the rear deck of a home. The deck was temporarily reinforced by the fire department. No one was home.

The driver, 85-year-old Richard Huizinga of Peoria, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Peoria County Coroner said he suffered a "catastrophic cardiac event" and was likely dead before his vehicle struck the home.

The coroner's office was unable to locate Huizinga's next-of-kin. Anyone with information is asked to call 309-669-2000.
