The bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria officially goes into retirement Thursday.

It marks Bishop Daniel Jenky's 75th birthday. By church rules, bishops must submit their resignations to the pope on that birthday.

Jenky has served as bishop in Peoria for 20 years. He will be replaced by Coadjutor Bishop Louis Tylka, who will become the ninth bishop of the Peoria diocese.

Tylka was appointed in May 2020. He previously served in the Chicago area.

The Catholic Diocese of Peoria covers 26 Illinois counties stretching from the Quad Cities to Danville.
