Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell says he's not running for a second term.
"Some of the policy decisions made by this board recently has changed my mindset about my future," he said.
Asbell has criticized cuts made to his office's budget last year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.
Asbell first announced his decision during a special county board meeting Tuesday afternoon.
"I planned to work until I was 62 here. I've done 27 years here. I probably would have gave it a couple more terms, but there's some policy decisions we can't come back from."
A Republican, Asbell has served as sheriff since 2017.
