The October death of an infant is under investigation as a homicide, marking Peoria's 30th on record this year.

Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria says a woman was pregnant when she was shot Sept. 20 on West Ann Street.

The mother lived, but her baby was born prematurely as a result — 23-day-old Jamiyla Bre'yele Webster-Carlton died Oct. 13 from complications of the premature delivery, due to the injuries her mother suffered when she was shot.

Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said homicide is considered the cause of death.

The case remains under investigation.
