East Peoria Popeye's May Face IEPA Investigation After Grease Dumping Violations

Google Maps Street View

The Tazewell County Health Department shut down an East Peoria fast-food eatery last Friday after discovering illegal grease dumping.

A health department spokesperson says the Popeye's Restaurant was illegally discharging grease into a storm sewer. That led to issues with the municipal sewer line clogging with grease.

The restaurant was reopened by the health department on Monday morning after cleaning out the lines.

The city of East Peoria is in communication with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for an investigation into the storm sewer issue.

The health department said the grease dumping could lead to contamination of waterways of the state of Illinois or federal waterways, a more serious offense. The restaurant is near Farm Creek, which discharges into the Illinois River.
