Springfield Road is the current major road reconstruction project happening in East Peoria. But the city is already queuing up its next big infrastructure job.

East Peoria Commissioner Dan Decker says Centennial Drive from Illinois 116 to just east of Highview Road is on tap for a $5.1 million dollar project. That's the steep portion of the roadway leading to and from Illinois Central College.

"We actually have done quite a bit of work over the years to the hill itself, but it is definitely one of those places that is probably the highest...it receives some of the highest number of complaints," Decker said. "It hasn't been being ignored. And this is an example of that. We have been preparing for it."

The city would need to offer up a 30 percent match to qualify for a federal Surface Transportation Block Grant for the project, which is currently expected for letting in 2027 or 2028 if the application moves forward. That means the city would be expected to pick up about $1.5 million.

"The hill needs a full rebuild. It has a lot of drainage issues, in addition to the road bed. So there's a complete rebuild to happen here, and it's got a big price tag to it," said city planning and development director Ty Livingston. "But the thought is to focus on that."

The city previously used these types of grant funds to re-do most of the rest of Centennial lying within the East Peoria city limits. Summit Drive was also extended from Washington Road.

The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission is the regional distributor of federal funds for these transportation projects.
