A former congressman from western Illinois has died.

Gale Schisler of London Mills, Illinois passed away on Sunday at the age of 86.

Schisler, a democrat, was first elected to the US House in 1964, and served one term representing the Quad Cities and Galesburg areas.

Tom Railsback, a republican who also died recently, defeated him.

After serving in the US House, Schisler was a member of the Illinois General Assembly from 1968 through 1980.

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Sunday February 9th (2:00-4:00 pm) and Monday the 10th (10:00 am) at the London Mills United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will follow at the Abingdon Cemetery.

Schisler was born on a farm in Knox County and after graduating from Abingdon High School, served in the Air Force. He earned degrees from Western Illinois University and Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. He also taught, coached, and was a principal at London Mills Junior High School.
