Park Plaza is the site of "Cafe in the Park" on Wednesday afternoons in the summer. The park sits between two buildings on East Main Street.

The plan was revealed during a two-hour session at the Kensington ballroom. People were able to view placards detailing the proposals, and the city wants residents to share their opinions on the ideas.

The radio story.

The plan focuses on East Main Street between Chambers and Academy Streets. But it also offers suggestions for areas around the Knox County Courthouse and Standish Park Arboretum.

Some of the smaller elements in the plan include adding trees, more patches of grass, bike paths, public art, and information kiosks. Some of these elements can be done right away. But others will take years to complete and are dependent on projects such as  the East Main Street underpass being completed first.

The proposal that generated the most discussion called for converting Park Plaza into a small parking lot. The most vocal opponent during the forum is  former business owner Dennis Case. He said the plaza is still a great asset for Galesburg.

"A great place to have events like Cafe in the Park. I know there’s been several churches that have used it over the years for their events. And it’s just a nice, central downtown location to hold these events," Case said.

Some residents are also concerned about how the city will pay for the improvements.  City Engineer Wayne Carl saidTIFmoney is  one potential source, though the city has yet to decide on funding.

Business owner TeresaPhillipson, who served on one of the focus groups that helped develop the plan, was pleased to see it come together.

"I’m excited about all the greenery.  A lot of the people here are involved and care about the community and what the downtown looks like,"Phillipsonsaid.

The city is encouraging more people to come forward with their thoughts on the plan. It's directing them to share comments with its Community Development department.

The project blueprints are posted on the city's website.
