U.S. Aircraft Fire On Iraqi Jets
NPR's Steve Inskeep reports that for the first time since the Gulf War, Iraqi planes challenged U.S. air patrols in the no-flight zone over northern and southern Iraq. The U.S. fired at least one air-to-air missile at an Iraqi plane that flew in the zone. There was no immediate report on whether the Iraqi plane had been downed. President Saddam Hussein says he will not recognize the no-flight zones and will challenge any American or British flights in the area.
