Robert Siegel speaks with Dr. Barbara Herwaldt, a medical epidemiologist in the Division of Parasidic Diseases at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, about the outbreak of an intestinal illness that has affected over 1000 people in at least 10 states. The illness, which causes diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, is the result of infection by a microorganism called Cyclospora cayetanensis (KAH-yah-teh-NEN-sis).
