Cave-in-Rock Ferry Resumes Full Operations

Creative Commons

CAVE-IN-ROCK - An Ohio River ferry between Illinois and Kentucky resumes full service Monday after operating on limited hours the past three months.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a new funding agreement between Illinois, Kentucky and the Ohio River Authority returns the Cave-in-Rock Ferry to a 16-hour-per-day, seven-day-a-week schedule. The ferry connecting Cave-in-Rock, Illinois with Marion, Kentucky, has been operating 12 hours per day since July 1.

The Southern Illinoisan reports the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will split $2.15 million in funding to the Ohio River Authority through June 30, 2020, to cover the cost of running a year-round ferry service and to pay for upgrades so the ferry meets new Coast Guard guidelines.

The ferry carries about 500 vehicles per day on average.
