Candidate Petition Filing Period is Open

A lot of people are campaigning for the March 20th primary in Illinois. But they won’t actually be on the ballot until they submit their petitions during a filing period that starts today.

Gordy Hulten is the Champaign County Clerk. He and his counterparts across the state will be receiving petitions for the primary ballot between now and next Monday. “We will get filings from everybody who’s running for county office or precinct committeeman. Everybody who’s running for state representative, state senate, all those folks file with the State Board of Elections in Springfield. So every county clerk is going to see some action this week.”

After the petition-filing period ends, election officials across Illinois will accept objections to those petitions for another week.

Then they’ll prepare the March primary ballots, with the goal of having them ready in time for the Early Voting period that starts in late January.
