Rauner Gives Munger New Job as Deputy Governor

Former Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger has a new job as a deputy to Governor Bruce Rauner.  It was just a few months ago that voters turned Munger out of office. The Republican lost to Democrat Susana Mendoza by about five percentage points.  Rauner had appointed Munger to that job; now he's given her another.

The administration says as deputy governor, she'll contribute to budget discussions and work with not-for-profits.  Munger will earn the same $135,000 salary she made as comptroller.  Munger will serve in addition to current Deputy Governor Trey Childress.

According to reporting by The State Journal-Register, Rauner has already hired nearly two-dozen other people who left the comptroller's office after Munger lost the election.

Rauner's office says the money was freed up when former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle left her $198,000-per-year position on Rauner's executive staff.

Brian Mackey formerly reported on state government and politics for NPR Illinois and a dozen other public radio stations across the state. Before that, he was A&E editor at The State Journal-Register and Statehouse bureau chief for the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin.
