An extension of Illinois' medical marijuana program by two and a half  years won lawmakers' approval. The Senate Tuesday also overwhelmingly voted to add post-traumatic stress disorder as an eligible medical condition.

Senator William Haine, the Alton Democrat sponsoring the measure, says cannabis can ease suffering.

"There's been no scandal, no abuse. This is the tightest law in the nation. It should be allowed to work and bring relief from pain."

The measure now goes to Governor Bruce Rauner, who helped to craft the deal. Critics say lawmakers should slow down. They also say marijuana has possible negative effects on PTSD symptoms.
