Drew Peterson's attorney is challenging the credibility of a prison informant enlisted to ensnare him in a murder-for-hire plot. Peterson's public defender cited several letters in which informant Antonio Smith discussed with another inmate how he'd benefit from setting up the former suburban Chicago police officer.
Wiretapped conversations played in court earlier this week show Peterson planning a prison celebration after believing he had arranged for Smith's uncle to kill Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow.
Peterson is on trial for allegedly seeking retaliation against the prosecutor following Peterson's 2012 conviction in his third wife's Kathleen Savio's death eight years earlier. He's pleaded not guilty.
Peterson was charged with first-degree murder in Savio's death after his fourth wife's 2007 disappearance.
