Abingdon-Avon School District Investigates Data Breach

Abingdon-Avon CUSD #276

The Abingdon-Avon School District is looking into a data breach that the district said happened in January. The district announced the breach on its website last week.

The announcement said unauthorized changes were made to student grade point averages, and there was unauthorized access to and copying of employees’ emails. A firm was hired to investigate the breach, and a district employee has been placed on leave.

Superintendent Chad Willis declined Tri States Public Radio's request for an interview. The radio story.

Jennifer Rosen, who has two children enrolled in the school district, is upset.

“Why was it being kept from the public if there’s a data breach? I think legally, anyone that’s been involved in it should be notified of it within a certain amount of time and that never happened,” Rosen said.

Rosen has filed two Freedom of Information Act requests to find out more about the data breach. One asked for details of communications between Superintendent Willis and the firm hired to investigate the breach. That request was denied by the district.

Rosen has also filed a FOIA seeking financial information about the district.  That one is pending.
