U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says he left a meeting with Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland even more convinced he's well qualified to serve. Durbin says the Senate should hold hearings on Garland's nomination.
Garland is a circuit court judge and an Illinois native. Durbin says "It's great to have this son of Illinois come visit me today."
Garland also has met with Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois, who says the Senate should hold hearings.
President Barack Obama nominated Garland to replace Antonin Scalia, who died Feb. 13. But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says there will be no hearings or votes on Garland's nomination. The Republican says voters should have a say in November before the vacancy is filled.
