SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois lawmakers continue to struggle to find a viable solution to the state's 20-year-long problem funding education.
Members of the Illinois House Education Task Force heard from suburban Chicago superintendents at their first meeting Tuesday. Suburban superintendents in wealthy property districts say plans that take money from their schools to give to poorer ones could result in multimillion dollar losses and burden tax payers in wealthy areas.
GOP leaders say recent reform plans create a system of winners and losers. Democratic Rep. William Davis says he doubts lawmakers will agree on adequate funding plan.
Superintendents agreed on ways to raise money such as adding a one-cent sales tax.
Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has said he will not support a plan that takes money from some districts.
The task force will meet throughout the spring.
