TINLEY PARK, Ill. (AP) - The University of Illinois Cancer Center and Governors State University are partnering to research cancer-related health disparities in Chicago's southern suburbs.
State Sen. Michael Hastings, a Tinley Park Democrat, said Monday that the institutions received a four-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute. The money will give them the ability to provide training and support to minority students interested in health disparities research.

The money also will pay for a breast cancer pilot project to test a mobile device app that lets primary care physicians screen women for elevated risk of breast cancer.

Hastings says having the medical research done in the southern suburbs is an "accomplishment for an area that is growing and needs expanded medical services."
