More than a decade of falling state funding is catching up with Western Illinois University. Tuesday WIUofficials announced plans to cut more than 7 million dollars from next year's budget, including the elimination of 50 faculty positions.Vice president for the Quad Cities campus, Joe Rives, says his campus has been economizing for years - reducing administrative costs so the university can focus on student retention and graduation.Past 3 years, QC has cut administrative spending by 11% and operations and maintenance by 25%.

In the coming months,WIUofficials say they'll try to cut four million dollars more from next year's budget, and that eliminating programs, wage cuts, and furloughs are all possibilities.

A native of Detroit, Herb Trix began his radio career as a country-western disc jockey in Roswell, New Mexico (“KRSY, your superkicker in the Pecos Valley”), in 1978. After a stint at an oldies station in Topeka, Kansas (imagine getting paid to play “Louie Louie” and “Great Balls of Fire”), he wormed his way into news, first in Topeka, and then in Freeport Illinois.
