Gov. Rauner announces Springfield high-speed rail agreement

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has announced a tentative agreement regarding rail traffic in the city of Springfield.

Rauner says that city, state and other officials have agreed to move rail traffic from the Third Street corridor - which cuts through downtown - to the 10th Street corridor east of downtown. He says the move will occur "as soon as practical."  Trains traveling through downtown will be limited to 40 mph.

The agreement settles a long-standing dispute over traffic along the route between Chicago and St. Louis.

Rauner says it's a "win-win" because it will improve the quality of life for residents and visitors downtown while making high-speed rail through Springfield more efficient.

Rauner says Illinois has committed about $300 million for improvements. Federal officials have committed about $1.6 billion.
