Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says he plans to stay in his job as long as he can. This a day after a group of mostly black aldermen called for him to step down.
McCarthy was due to testify before some of those same aldermen at an afternoon budget hearing. The aldermen contend McCarthy has had plenty of time to reduce street violence plaguing the city and hasn't done so. The city has seen a 21% increase in murders, a trend seen nationally.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel says that he supports McCarthy's "work and commitment." Also, officials announced that McCarthy's second-in-command, AlfonzaWysinger, would be retiring.
