Prosecutors in suburban Chicago say a law requiring DNA samples from Illinois felons led to charges in a girl's stabbing death and sexual assault 30 years ago.
DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin says a judge Monday denied bond for 62-year-old Michael R. Jones of Champaign.
He was arrested Sunday and is charged with murder and sexual assault in the killing of 15-year-old Kristina Wesselman, whose body was found in a field in unincorporated Glen Ellyn on July 22, 1985.
Berlin said police had access to Jones' DNA because he pleaded guilty in Champaign County in July to felony aggravated domestic battery. He says Jones submitted DNA as required under a 2002 Illinois law. Berlin says police were alerted to a match on Sept. 10.
