Illinois State University breaks private fundraising record

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State University says it has broken its previous private fundraising record by receiving $36.8 million in donations during the fiscal year that ended June 30. The figure is nearly double the previous high of $19.5 million last year. The school attributes the bump to an increase in large planned or deferred gifts and a growing alumni base of supporters. The $36.8 million includes cash, pledges, gifts-in-kind and estate commitments to the university. The school in Normal says the number of alumni donors has increased for the fifth year in a row. School officials say they awarded 1,876 scholarships and 34 new scholarships were established. Illinois State University President Larry Dietz says the totals mean the school has "a very bright future."
