Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office says the city's public schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett has resigned. The announcement comes amid a federal investigation over a roughly $20 million no-bid contract that Chicago Public Schools awarded to a training academy where Byrd-Bennett once worked as a consultant. In a statement, Emanuel says he is "saddened by the circumstances" that led to Byrd-Bennett's resignation.
A separate statement from school board president says the resignation is effective Monday. Byrd-Bennett has not been accused of wrongdoing. She has been on a paid leave of absence since April. Federal investigators have asked for records related to the district's contract with SUPES Academy, which provides principal training. CPS has suspended its contract with SUPES, which has defended its training.
