An Illinois lawmaker has introduced legislation that would restore $26 million in social services and public health grants recently suspended by Republican Governor Bruce Rauner.
The bill is sponsored by state Senator Dan Kotowski. The Park Ridge Democrat cites "shared concern" by lawmakers for funding grants that pay for the funerals and burials of public-assistance recipients, smoking cessation, teen programs, autism, and HIV and AIDS programs.
Rauner suspended the grants as part of his push to reduce a $1.6 billion shortfall in the state budget.
Rauner's office didn't immediately respond to requests for comment on whether it supported the legislation.
Speaker Michael Madigan's spokesman said the House would review the proposal if it is passed by the Senate.
