Illinois in need of qualified workers

Peoria Public Radio

Illinois doesn't have enough skilled workers to fill the number of jobs that require education or training beyond high school.

That's prompting a group to call for more investment in education. Illinois has about 150,000 jobs that lack qualified workers, according to a study from the business group ReadyNation.

Kayla Edwards works for an employment agency in central Illinois. She says she has a hard time matching workers with the available jobs.

"It's frustrating when someone really wants to work, but isn't qualified to take a promising job opening. It's equally frustrating for employers who can't find well skilled workers to fill jobs and often have to settle for hiring less qualified employees."

The group supports the governor's proposed increase to early childhood education, which they say helps build skills at an early age.

They are against his proposal to decrease the budget for state-funded childcare services. They say high-quality childcare makes for a better workforce.
