Illinois' comptroller says she plans to expedite payments to child care providers who have gone weeks without promised state funds.
Republican Leslie Munger announced Friday that she is working closely with the Department of Human Services to get money to providers in order for them to "continue to provide vital services for children."
She noted that those providers have been faced with "significant hardships."
Child care was one of a number of state programs and agencies facing possible shutdowns because of a $1.6 billion hole in the state's budget.
Lawmakers approved a plan this week to patch the gap by allowing Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to transfer $1.3 billion from funds dedicated to other purposes, including parks and conservation. The rest comes from a 2.25% across-the-board budget cut.
