Pullman clock tower to become national monument

www.pullmanil.org

The historic Pullman clock tower is going to be a national monument. President Barack Obama will be in Chicago next week to make the designation official.

Michael Schymanski is president of the Historic Pullman Foundation. He says he is thrilled.

"We’re really thrilled by the designation because Pullman covers 150 years of significant events of our cultural heritage as a nation."

Industrialist George Pullman built the town for the workers at his rail car factory. The Pullman National Monument will be the first national park in Chicago and just the second in Illinois.

Schymanski says the designation will mean more visitors, more attention and more money for the working class neighborhood on the far South Side.
