Gov. Bruce Rauner is lauding the efforts of one Illinois county to consolidate local government and save taxpayers money.
DuPage County officials eliminated a fire district and a sanitary district as part of an effort to save more than $100 million over the next 20 years. Advocates say it's a model for other Illinois counties.
Rauner highlighted DuPage's savings at his first State of the State address last week.
DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin says the work has been difficult and tedious. The Republican from Elmhurst says only a portion of the savings came from eliminating government units. The rest came from trimming services and cutting budgets, which included employee layoffs.
Democratic Board Member Liz Chaplin of Downers Grove says the county needs to provide harder evidence of savings.
