The Illinois Community College Board wants more autonomy

The Illinois Community College Board is looking for a little more autonomy.

The state requires community college programs and some budgeting matters to get the board's approval. But then those decisions are reviewed by another panel, the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

Community colleges spokesman Matthew Barry says they plan to seek legislation that would do away with the extra oversight.

"Our Board believes that this provides an opportunity to streamline some of the functions of government."

As for the other side, the Higher Education Board's Executive Director Jim Applegate says he has yet to see a proposal, but says the working relationship will continue...

"We are in constant collaboration with each other on more issues than you can count and that's not going to change."
