WIU to host wilderness first responder course in March

Western Illinois University is hosting a wilderness first responder course in March. The 72-hour program is designed for outdoor educators, adventure guides, professional search and rescue teams and those involved in disaster relief.
It's run by Wilderness Medical Associates International and is meant to prepare people to handle medical emergencies in remote settings.
The certification course will take place over spring break at the university's Horn Field campus in Macomb. There will also be a re-certification session for those who have been through the course in the past.
The university says it is one of only two locations in Illinois to offer the courses.
Horn Field Campus Program Coordinator Mindy Pheiffer says the program welcomes applicants from all vocational backgrounds and skill levels.
