Retired state workers want their money back

Attorneys for retired Illinois state employees paying increased health insurance premiums have asked a Sangamon County judge to order the money be returned.
The filing was made Wednesday. The attorneys represent about 75,000 retired Illinois state workers fighting against a 2012 state law requiring them to pay a portion of their pension toward their health insurance.

The filing is to be heard in court Friday.

The filing is in response to a ruling from the Illinois Supreme Court tossing the legislation. The high court said health insurance coverage is a constitutionally protected retirement benefit. The legislation was aimed at fixing Illinois' unfunded pension liabilities.

The retirement systems have collected the money in separate accounts while the case moves through the courts.
